The 1957 Jaguar XK140 Drophead Coupe is a stunning example of British automotive craftsmanship from the golden era of sports cars. It was the successor to the XK120, featuring notable improvements in comfort, performance, and handling while retaining the sleek, curvaceous design that made its predecessor so iconic.
Under the bonnet, the XK140 was powered by Jaguar’s legendary 3.4-liter inline-six engine, producing 210 horsepower in this top spec Special Equipment (SE) model. This engine, derived from the Le Mans-winning C-Type, delivered impressive acceleration and a top speed of around 193 km/h (120 mph), making it one of the fastest production cars of its time. A four-speed close ratio manual gearbox provides a smooth and engaging driving experience, while the improved rack-and-pinion steering offered better control compared to the XK120’s older steering system.
One of the standout features of the Drophead Coupe variant was its fully lined and insulated convertible top, which, when raised, provided a more refined cabin environment than the more minimalist Roadster model. The Drophead Coupe also had wind-up windows and a beautifully crafted walnut dashboard, giving it a more luxurious and comfortable interior, making it an excellent choice for grand touring.
Visually, the XK140 retained the elegant long bonnet and flowing fenders of the XK120 but introduced a more practical and modern touch with its slightly larger cabin and a redesigned front grille. The chrome accents, wire-spoke wheels, and classic Jaguar badging contributed to its timeless appeal.
Here is your opportunity to secure a sought-after classic, admired for its blend of performance, luxury, and style. It represents an era when Jaguar was at the forefront of both racing and road car design, and its legacy continues to influence the brand’s sports cars to this day.
